movie chalk

Chalk illustrates the charges that Freire & Gatto make in many ways,The movie Chalk is a story about the difficulties a teacher may be introduced to in our current educational process. Difficulties as diverse and boring teacher student interaction. Getting the students to pay attention in class. Or even getting the students excited about the class in general. In chalk there were several instances when teachers were having trouble engaging with their class. For example the gentleman who was a Software Engineer who said “after taking a personality, it was decided I would make a good teacher.” Obviously this guy has no communication skills at all. His class wonders about mentally while he does his best to capture their attention. The physical education teacher had to work extremely hard to even get her students off the bleachers the first day. I related to the boring & depressed atmosphere of the teachers lounge mentioned by Gatto in one of his writings. Several times there was a scene in the lounge, teachers we slouched on couches, complaining about their jobs and the students involved. It was a very direct representation of b both writings indeed.

important lesson i learned

The most important thing that I have learned is the fact that fighting is not OK. I grew up in southern California where all bad things happen gang fights drugs etc. when I was In junior high down there I was getting into trouble and fighting was the biggest thing, there was a lot of racial tension that was going on and I was stuck in the middle of it trying to protect my self. Times were rough down there. When I moved up too Washington state the habits came with me too and I thought I was tough shit. I got into three fights in my ninth grade and made a name for myself as being scary. Going through high school I didn't’t like that label at all and I wanted to change that. So the way I changed it was by getting involved with the student body and sports. From there on I turned to a big teddy bear J the lesson I learned was that I didn't want to be a negative person in my life

traveling solo

"How I Learned to Love Traveling Solo" was nice to read due to the fact that traveling fascinates me. I plan to travel a large amount in my life. This narrative definitely showed a different format than the other narratives, it allowed for separate sections kind of like a quick "How to" lesson. This made it easy to read and more enjoyable. I loved how she expressed her exploring patterns and how she would go about it on her own, a nice walk to the park by yourself is nice now and again, but also seems to be as great way to get acquainted with a new location. I never would have personally thought about solo verses people time while traveling independently, but i also don't think i would travel on my own in the first place. As she said though, you cant sit around and wait for the right traveling buddy because that can be very difficult and take a long time. i loved the way she expressed her loving to travel enough to be independent enough to go on her own. it was inspirational to myself who would also enjoy traveling.

3rd and final paper :0

When was the last time you walked through the halls of a high school? Not too many of us if we are 25 and older. I can say for the adults who have children know what it is like. With the K-12 curriculum that we have now it seems almost difficult for all of the next generation to pass or go to college there is that many few who do. For the students that begin their journey they set themselves up for a repeated process for 12 year, getting up super early to sit in a class room for so many hours to get up the next day and do it again. School is so easy for K-7 because you’re just learning all of your basic stuff like math English science and etc. but soon as you step though the high school doors it is a different story.
Student are all excited for the first day as a freshman because it’s a new school, new environment, new people, time to discover themselves. But what they don’t realize is how much work they need to put in to succeed in through 9-12. You start to see students fall of typically after their 10th grade year. The reason why I state this is because I’ve been through the process. The school curriculum is way to difficult, as it should be, but it shouldn’t be so hard to where it is boring to the student and there grades are dropping off. It’s the same routine for them to be sitting in a class for 45min for 7 periods 5 days a week, and usually what is happening in the class room is the teacher teaching and explaining stuff and students falling asleep, or not grasping the full lesson.
With the way this basic curriculum is in high school it was a set up for failure with our generation. A lot of the young adults that are in this 21st century like to have things given to them and not work hard to earn whatever it is they want. The more students that drop out of school will more than likely not be successful. What causes the students in high school to lose focus and dropout of school or fail? According to the National Center of Educational Statistics website in 2011 the USA, 7 percent of registered students drop out or fail high school. With this being said something needs to change to where the current students in high school are guided correctly through there high school. The most difficult class to be taking in high school is math, now on a personal I know I’m not the only one out there who had problems with math. The issue that I would address is that we don’t have teachers on a daily bases who are willing to help(pretty much hold or hand through it) but there is no problem with that because some students need that, and isn’t the point of being a teacher is wanting to see our students want to succeed.
The way I think the curriculum should change is that we start from scratch and rebuild. The K-6 should be taught the same with the basic learning things like your English, math, history, and science. Now getting to the 7-12 we should have a guidance teacher, one that can connect with the student on a basis showing that they care about your future and start your basic ed. Plan but not making it difficult to where the students turn away the whole point here is to make sure there having fun and they stay engaged with their schooling. A successful student is a happy student, the guidance teacher should have their own class room with the students to stay in communication with him/her students and always have an open door to talk or help with their education. The goal is to have an always positive teacher and never be negative. Because majority of the teachers out there can be negative and give up on the student.
The guidance we want is to never give up on their students and always push for the best. The teaching ways that should be applied is to be extremely active with their students at all times so they are grasping the knowledge being given. Now with that being said I also believe that this teacher should have a quiz at the end of the day and graded on spot and also does not affect their grade to make sure they understood what they had learned, if the students were to fail the quiz then the teacher would go over what they didn’t understand and have them retest.
At the end of each day we want to make sure we are producing success and not having the students going home and feeling frustrated and thinking there stupid and there never going to understand. It would be good to see having a student going home and telling their parent that they had a good day and there learning so much. One thing that should be kept in the school curriculum is soon has the student reaches the 11 grade they start exploring what route they want to take when the graduate and start looking into what they really want to do, because when your high school you don’t know what you want to do with your life all there worrying about is passing class and looking for the next best thing. So the senior project is a great thing to have because it sets the student up to be more engaged on what they want to do as a career. And in the senior year of high school it should be more focused on career training and providing them the help with help with the career they want right out of high school. With the guidance teacher they should provide contacts and links to help them get that opportunity.
By this point the guidance teacher would have established a relationship with their students. The curriculum would be such a great experience for the students because all they would need to know is the basic education and focus more on what they want to do with their life instead of feeding a bunch of knowledge that half of it won’t be applied to the real world anyways, I would want to see it be more or a career based schooling and training more than anything

With this process it would highly benefit every student out there because it would give them a head start to life. And it would be having them enjoying what they are doing instead of dreading what’s going on. Dreams do come true, and it starts in the class room we need more positive attitudes out there instead of neglecting ones. I want to see high graduation rates, high transfer rates, just success around. But it needs to be changed at the high school level, and at the rate it is going not to many are going to be successful and more and more are going to drop out or fail school. Think about it this is going to be the generation that will be taking care of us, we don’t want bums we want productive people.

what author makes more since too me

Who do I like better, I would say  Barry Boyce because  School should focus more on life skills. You can give the student a great resume but what really matters is how they present it, and in school you do not learn that. Bell hooks Ideas of critical thinking should be taught as well. Keith Gilyard Investing in the schools programs for arts and humanities and even classes, because it will give students to strive for something in my opinion. Barry suggested that could have a large impact on the educational system. I agree on the rest of authors statements but strongly agree with Boyce, hooks and Gilyard.

how these 2 section will help me with paper 3

The two sections by Freire and Gatto are good examples for us to use on our third paper, they both go into detail about the different kinds of schooling and give a great statement on how schools now these days are basically in other words pointless. what we will be doing for our third paper is critiquing education, which these two did, they showed in each a well thought out argument as well as a well supported and persuasive knowledge about the educational system.

Black vs Rose

Lewis Black talks on "The Daily show" on the poor education system. he discusses the topic of charter schools being better schools widely more effective, but also being hard to get into and attend. Charter schools seeming to be more effective simply for the fact that they individualize to each student and set expectations for each. while Chalk teaches that public schools set low standards for the majority of students to be able to meet which brings the entire level of schooling down to accommodate its lower level learners. not nurturing the gifted kids talents.

Mike Rose's Resolutions in Education, states "To stop making the standardized test score the gold-standard of student achievement and teacher effectiveness." this stuck out at the point in the movie chalk where the history teacher wanted badly to become teacher of the year. now obviously this was a comedy, but it showed how teachers are meant to push for their students scores to be the best to show their performance vs. things like student understanding comprehension and memorability on the subject. school systems are poorly judging the teachers and students efforts on scores. in this scene the students commented on how hard they each worked, even though they didn't win.

what i agree with

What do I agree with lol? honesty I haven't read a single thing in this English  class that I didn't agree with. It has all had some great ideas and directions we could head to. I guess I can relate more to Paolo Freier on his banking system. It seems more relevant that students have been stepping into the role of showing up, learn, memorize, test, move on, and repeat. It seems that teachers are more interested in what they can put into a student rather than how valuable it is going to be to the student. One thing that I think Freier forgot is that; with any amount of continuous teaching, you reach a cap. Thats the healthy learning environments are so effective. Teaching done by both parties where the students are allowed to give and receive, even if wrong it allows a more expressive and effect way of learning.

changes for schooling K-12

There are many things I can think of for possible change in the K-12 schooling. Yet at the same time I feel as if there is no general big fix that can be applied to see changes take place. I think that the educational system has spun itself into a circle that keeps feeding the negatives. In a system failure like this, I believe it would be better to start from the bottom. Build a new foundation and work our way back up. If you don't fix a lot of the core issues, we could essentially make small changes, end up seeing progress, but then the issue would most likely come back. Building a foundation on our educational system that starts with the bottom would allow us to build up, try new concepts without fear of losing years in a children's education. For example, if we tried a new way of learning in a fourth grade classroom with a secure foundation, even if the new way of learning wasn't received as well as we would have the foundational educational backing to still provide the fourth graders with a proper program. There are a few changes that would need to be set up prior for this concept to even work.

group work

n what ways did reading this website enrich, complicate and or confuse your understanding about Freire’s banking concept.
This website was a way to connect us reading it, to what freire is trying to give off to the readers from his second book published Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In the book he goes into great detail of what the characteristics of teachers are. He writes about the banking process of educators and “the “banking” concept of education regards men as adaptable, manageable beings, the more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness that would result from their intervention in the world.” Here is talking about how students learn to adapt to what they are learning, the teachers know everything and the students know nothing. He states that the teacher talks and the students listen.  He also writes, “The capability of banking education to minimize or annul the students’ creative power and to stimulate their credulity serves the interests of the oppressors, who care neither to have the world revealed nor to see it transformed.”  The oppressors he speaks of he is talking also about the employers, the elected officials,  as well as anyone with socio-economic power over others. While the website states that, “as the illiterate person learns and is able to make such statements, his world becomes radically transformed and he is no longer willing to be a mere object responding to changes occurring around him. The educated are more likely to decide to take upon themselves the struggle to change the structures of society that until now have served to oppress them.”  He wants us to understand that we need to have an education where the students shouldn’t be afraid to speak out and to constructively criticize the teachers. They need to not let boredom overpower them in education being that the “educated man is the adapted man, because he is better “fit” for the world.” “The more completely the majority adapt to the purposes which the dominant minority prescribe for them (thereby depriving them of the right to their own purposes)”

Final for paper#2

Dr. Begerts

My two history teachers
Having the life of a high school student is a blessing in many different ways because you get to experience a lot, you’re going through your growing period of becoming an adult, some of the things a high school student would experience are the dance, sports, boy/girlfriend, parties and more, but something that most students get to experience is the connection they establish between their teachers. I have two history teachers that I would like to compare in their teaching styles and how they affect their students in the class room, both teachers were friends to one another and they coached football at the high school together, but one was a senior class teacher and the other was a sophomore teacher Mr. Allen and Mr. Albee.
I personally knew Mr. Allen and the type of personality he had before the school year even started, and that was going to an open house event. The very first conversation we had was about why I was not on the football team that year and I told him my grades were not good. Now when I look back on it I see that he was trying to make a personal connection with me because he seen talent. The first day of class Mr. Allen was straight up and told everyone that he had brain cancer, there was complete silence in the and everyone felt terrible he then passed out the school syllabus for the semester, when he was going over it he was talking about what stuff we were going to be graded on, a classmate next to me complained and was like why do we got to take a quiz ever Friday, Mr. Allen responded “to see if you guys are doing what you are supposed to. In my thought process I was like “damn this class is not going to be fun at all.
In fact Mr. Allen was a tough teacher but the way he teaches makes everyone understands the history content.  The text book was extremely difficult for some of the students to read, that he made us watch a lot of videos to help jump start our brains. Mr. Allen was not the type of guy who wanted to be your friend, but wanted you to be successful, he made us read the text every day in class, because we were pop quizzed on it every Friday before class started. All students would come into class dreading to take the test which was handed out by the teacher, and then everyone would be in science with their heads looking the test with pencils filling in the empty lines.
Mr. Allen use to be a marine, and everyone knew how his attitude is and what he does not put up with so the mowing and growing was not accepted by him during class time, if someone would talk back to him or be a smart ass then he would kick you out of class, Mr. Allen was such a hard person to work with sometimes cause he would be stubborn on certain situations, a big one would be debating in the class, the reason I say that is because you usually have that one person in the class that will push the teachers buttons and start an argument in the class on the debated situation, I mean when a debate takes place it is an open opinion at that point, but it would get frustrating for the class.
When it came down to the semester class final everyone was so nervous standing outside of the class room door because no one knew what to expect how it would be. Mr. Allen came and unlocked the door and all the students sat in their seats, he passed out the final and said everyone begin. All the pencils start to write on the paper as everyone is so deeply focused on the test. 30 min from the test being handed out people were beginning to start to turn in their test, and looking at their faces you can tell that they were feeling confident. The next day the results were posted outside on a board 85% passed the class. For all of the hard work and how Mr. Allen taught us made a lot of since on why he was tough, that was because us being 10th graders and starting a new life he wanted to show that life isn’t going to be easy and things will not be just given to you, you had to work for them.
Now going into my senior year I wasn’t expecting to get Mr. Albee which was Mr. Allen friend as well as another coach on the football team, but indeed I did end up getting him my senior year, I was nervous at first because I know that the teachers do talk and I was in Mr. Allen class as well. The first day I walked in and his sealing had a bunch of flags painted on the tiles as well as there being a big Marine Corps flag in class. He had passed out his syllabus and all of the class students were following along as he was going over, Mr. Albee gave a little bio about himself, he was a marine as well and is married, I thought to myself this guy is going to be difficult as well, but Mr. Albee stated that he knows most of us have been in Mr. Allen’s class in the 10th grade, he wanted to clarify that he is not as mean as Mr. Allen but they are best friends, that raised everyone’s confidents a little.
Mr. Albee was a tough teacher, but when it came down to it he really was not. He made the class from fun. He made the curriculum fun with history and a lot more interactive and hands on. We continued to still have quizzes every Friday but they were not tough because it was based off the films we would watch in the class and we took notes. Mr. Albee was a silly guy and would tell jokes to the students, his motive was “hey its senior year why not have fun”. Everyday students came into class energized and was excited for what is going to happen next. Mr. Albee had a high rate of passing students in his class and it only continued to raise.

Still to these day these teachers have influenced me greatly. I learned from Mr. Allen that having someone in your life that is hard on you and pushes you is not a bad thing, because that makes you want to try harder in life and be successful, Mr. Albee taught me things can be tough in life but you have to make the best out of them meaning finding something enjoyable to keep your mind focused. Both teachers were awesome people but Mr. Allen did end up passing away my senior year and that stuck with me and the other classmates for a while, and Mr. Albee ended up becoming really sick and had to stop teaching.

dead poets society group discussion

Although Mr. Keen is a very good teacher, we noticed how within that Neal is a peer teacher to Todd. Todd is a shy boy, and Neal is part of the popular crowd. They are placed as roommates and Neal takes Todd under his wing. He insists that Tom goes with him to the Dead Poets Society, and includes him in all the study groups. Neal befriends Todd, and slowly Todd becomes more open and believing in what he says.  Todd starts opening up to Neal, like sharing about his birthday and birthday presents. Neal is slowly helping Todd grow as a student, and could help his academic career by not having the fear of speaking up.

macfarland/escalante comparison

They are both similar in that they believe in their students and don't take any crap from them,  they both seem really forward with their students and try to get them to engage in what they're learning.
Mr.Escalante would give a quiz every day on the math to make sure they're doing their work and come up with activities in class to help get their attention. Mr. MacFarland would have a quiz on reading every other day, have the students write three to four essays a month, and read a book every two to three weeks. He gave me a way to feel special by using my mind. And he provided a role model that wasn't shaped on physical prowess alone, and something inside me that I wasn't quite aware of responded to that"
MacFarland asked questions often and had the students do reports on poems while Escalante presented scenes and had the students do reports on calculus problems. each in their own helping the students gain a better knowledge to their learning.

movie notes

jaime had a mild heart attack and the teacher taking his place is a music teacher and said he's never taught calculus in his life, the students have their AP test soon and wont be doing very good without mr escalante

after taking their ap test all the students ran to the ocean and jumped in the water with their clothes on
angel went in his boxers

18 passed they all got accused of cheating on their tests and now the school is in trouble.

the students felt so grateful for mr escalantes teaching that they took his car and fixed it up, he thought that it was stolen and had to walk home from school.
All Students got fewer than 5 wrong on the tests and the normal wrong answers range from 10-14
Hes the teacher he knows his kids he wants to see the tests
They all made the same mistakes because they all had the same teacher he taught them step by step
Finished the test with time to spare
No proof of wrong doing only suspicion of cheating
Demanding to see the tests
Jaime accusing them of something going on that no one is talking about and accusing of racism because they’re members of a minority
Threatens to call security
Stands up for his kids that they didn’t do anything and states he is going to prove them wrong

the students are retaking their AP tests

movie second half. (group)

(The scene discussed which was a great example of good teaching, was the scene where Mr. Escalante went to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) building to demand to see the tests that his students took. As he entered he was greeted by Dr. Pearson, and Dr. Rameriez whom were the two men that went to the school to investigate the conspiracy that had occurred, the investigators told Escalante that all students got fewer than five wrong on their tests... that the average answers answered wrong in other schools range from 10-14 incorrect. They stated that the class also finished the test with plenty of time to spare. They were nice to say that they had no proof of wrong doing they only have suspicion of cheating.  Furthermore the investigators told Escalante that the problem wasn’t with him it is with the ETS and the students. Escalante stated that he is the teacher and he knows his kids and he wants to see the tests, and that if they all made the same mistakes maybe it is because they all had the same teacher, and he taught them step by step calculus. Escalante accuses them of racism stating that if this were the beverly hills school, they wouldn't be second guessing those students,  Dr. Pearson got very offended as he grew up in that area of living as well. The discussion got heated and Escalante leaves the room leaving behind few words to catch their attention. "If I catch you on the street I'm gonna kick the shit out of you!"- J.Escalante

paper 1

James Jones
English 101
10/17/13
Professor Begert
How I started cutting hair
How did I learn how to cut hair? That is a good question, I learned by cutting my own hair. It started at the age of 13 in southern California, I remember when my mom would take me into a barbershop and I would sit there and get my hair done, it was such a cool process. It was cool because it felt good and it looked amazing when it was all done. When sitting in the chair I would observe the other barbers that were there and was curious on how they were cutting the hair. My mom bought me my own pair of clippers from Wal-Mart, and from there on I was cutting my own hair and learning how to do it.
There was a lot of repetition that was involved, like going to school with a crooked hair line, or going to the Baber and hearing him tell your mom that he shouldn’t cut his own hair anymore. Hearing things like that made me want to keep trying and trying until I got it down. I remember when I first cut someone’s hair other than mine, and that was my best friends. I sat him in a chair outside of my apartment in the middle of the night with a super bright porch light and cut his hair, I had my mom observe me do it. When I got done with his hair cut it was not perfect, but I did need the experience of cutting a different hair type. I did have a lot of fun cutting his hair.
I left California after I completed the 8th grade and I was kind of nervous about my hair. So when we moved to Washington we looked for a barber nearby in Bremerton. We found a shop called TJS. I remember my mom giving me the money and she sat in the car and waited while I got my hair cut. When I was done getting my haircut and the Baber letting me look in the mirror, I knew from there I was not going to sit in another chair and get another cut again, because I was going to learn. Now learning is not so easy when it comes to using a trimmer I thought it was going to be the easiest thing ever, I was completely wrong. I ran in to problems like having to sharp of a trimmer and cutting myself, or not having a sharp crisp line.
That was my biggest pet peeve of all time because I wanted my hair to look good. As time went on people started to notice my hair and asking questions. The main question I got was “hey who cuts your hair” it looks good. When I told them I did it myself they didn’t believe me. I always go that response it was funny for a little bit, until a friend of mine asked me to cut his hair in high school for homecoming. From there on that judgment stopped happening and people would ask me too cut their hair.
Cutting hair is not an easy thing to do because it takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. As well you have to be able to work with different people and be able to take criticism. My best friends have shown me the best of both worlds and I have worked with random people that I do not even know. I have had many influences in my life to want to keep cutting hair and get better at it. I have meet and talked to barbers that have their own shop, talked to teachers that can get you your degree.
Having that feeling around the people who do haircuts well and charge at a professional price is something special. Here’s an example, I went to a barbershop and talked to a random barber and asked him “hey do you know how to cut as good as having an extremely straight hairline like Steve Harvey” now the reason why I asked him that was because I had been watching movies and TV shows that have African American actors, and there hair looks perfect a sharp and it brought to be curiosity on how they do that and how I can get my hair to look like that. I mentioned Steve Harvey to the barber because he is a well-known person and his hair was amazing when he did have hair. The first thing he said was “it is all chemically done” I was like in my head what does that mean. He then proceeded to show me the dye called bigen. Bigen Is a permanent dye that can be used on female or male and the color lasts for a month.
I left and went home researched the product and got what I needed. I went and bought the dye and tried it on myself I was so happy with the results that I called my friend and I wanted to try it on him there are still a few things that I am learning but it is worth it because I like that outcome of a fresh haircut. Things that have also influenced me are YouTube videos of other peoples work, tutorials on how to do certain styles. Etc, plus I like the completion in the Bremerton area, there are only 2 other young barbers like me in the area that has a cliental and does great work. It pushes me to cut better and be better and have knowledge of things that the other barbers do not have, I research different ways of cutting hair from the other side of the county, mainly the south.

I plan on making a career out of cutting hair and becoming a professional barber and opening up my own shop. I know the steps that I need to take and what degree and courses that I need to take in order to be successful with my goal.

What ed. nar. i liked the most

The essay that I would say that stuck to me the most is Malcolm X's "learning how to read". the reason why I say that is because I like Malcolm x and the things that he done, and the movement he began back in the day. the essay got me to stay reading due to his experience in prison. Malcolm use the stay up long hours of the day and get only 3-4hours of sleep just so he can read. he had mentioned that he would read by his jail door to get light, until the guard will circle, that when he would hurry into bed and pretend to sleep. when the guard was done he would go back and read he would do that all night. it amazes me how one person had so much determination to learn and better his penmanship.

How the essays differ?

Malcolm X's, Rose's, and the 3 bloggers differ in my different ways. for starter the bloggers talk about there blogs and how to them, create them. Malcolm x's and rose's talk about there educational purposes. reading the 3 bloggers essay will benefit the person who is reading if they are looking how to blog or start a blog. Malcolm X and Rose are two different characters, so some reading there essays separately will understand how Malcolm taught himself to read, and learn about his prison life, compared to rose having a education at UCLA and the learning came easier.

Successfully prewriting technique

honestly the only prewriting thing that I have used, and I am sure everyone else has used it as well, would be that bubble chart known as (clustering). when clustering you have your topic in the middle and from there would branch off your ideas that have to deal with that topic you have chosen. I have been using this skill since jr. high, it was really well and its a good starting point if you have no idea on what to right about, just start jotting down ideas.

Malcom X and Mike Rose narritive comparison

(Malcolm X)

(Mike Rose)
Reading both Malcolm X's and Mike Rose's narratives were both truly inspiring to read, both talked about how something was important to them, and what they did to reach that goal, Malcolm talked about his situation in being in jail and not being able to read, and only slept 3-4 hrs a night because he was trying to be more of a educated black man as well improving his penmanship. Mike rose is nationally recognized American education scholar who went to UCLA. his narrative talked about his events in the class room. both narrative essays format were similar except one was longer than the other, but reading both has put me on the right track to write my paper.

I have never blogged about something before in my life because I had no use for it. I am taking English 101 and was asked to create a blog, I researched to blogs on Google and they were “how I learned to program computers” and “how I learned to live Google free” reading the first blog I noticed how he described how the blogging process work, he also had picture examples of his blogs. Some examples that he shared was how the way your blog page looks. Personally looking at that it made since to me in the matter of how you want to draw people into your page, so he was saying the way to draw people in is to have cool theme, and things that make your page pop, like colors, words, etc, the second blog was about how people use Google on a daily basis and how he choice not to use it in his life. Google is a national business on the internet that makes a lot of money, and people use that search engine for everything, but there are other search engines out there like bing, ask, and yahoo. These are just options that other people can use because some prefer it.
