dead poets society group discussion

Although Mr. Keen is a very good teacher, we noticed how within that Neal is a peer teacher to Todd. Todd is a shy boy, and Neal is part of the popular crowd. They are placed as roommates and Neal takes Todd under his wing. He insists that Tom goes with him to the Dead Poets Society, and includes him in all the study groups. Neal befriends Todd, and slowly Todd becomes more open and believing in what he says.  Todd starts opening up to Neal, like sharing about his birthday and birthday presents. Neal is slowly helping Todd grow as a student, and could help his academic career by not having the fear of speaking up.

macfarland/escalante comparison

They are both similar in that they believe in their students and don't take any crap from them,  they both seem really forward with their students and try to get them to engage in what they're learning.
Mr.Escalante would give a quiz every day on the math to make sure they're doing their work and come up with activities in class to help get their attention. Mr. MacFarland would have a quiz on reading every other day, have the students write three to four essays a month, and read a book every two to three weeks. He gave me a way to feel special by using my mind. And he provided a role model that wasn't shaped on physical prowess alone, and something inside me that I wasn't quite aware of responded to that"
MacFarland asked questions often and had the students do reports on poems while Escalante presented scenes and had the students do reports on calculus problems. each in their own helping the students gain a better knowledge to their learning.

movie notes

jaime had a mild heart attack and the teacher taking his place is a music teacher and said he's never taught calculus in his life, the students have their AP test soon and wont be doing very good without mr escalante

after taking their ap test all the students ran to the ocean and jumped in the water with their clothes on
angel went in his boxers

18 passed they all got accused of cheating on their tests and now the school is in trouble.

the students felt so grateful for mr escalantes teaching that they took his car and fixed it up, he thought that it was stolen and had to walk home from school.
All Students got fewer than 5 wrong on the tests and the normal wrong answers range from 10-14
Hes the teacher he knows his kids he wants to see the tests
They all made the same mistakes because they all had the same teacher he taught them step by step
Finished the test with time to spare
No proof of wrong doing only suspicion of cheating
Demanding to see the tests
Jaime accusing them of something going on that no one is talking about and accusing of racism because they’re members of a minority
Threatens to call security
Stands up for his kids that they didn’t do anything and states he is going to prove them wrong

the students are retaking their AP tests

movie second half. (group)

(The scene discussed which was a great example of good teaching, was the scene where Mr. Escalante went to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) building to demand to see the tests that his students took. As he entered he was greeted by Dr. Pearson, and Dr. Rameriez whom were the two men that went to the school to investigate the conspiracy that had occurred, the investigators told Escalante that all students got fewer than five wrong on their tests... that the average answers answered wrong in other schools range from 10-14 incorrect. They stated that the class also finished the test with plenty of time to spare. They were nice to say that they had no proof of wrong doing they only have suspicion of cheating.  Furthermore the investigators told Escalante that the problem wasn’t with him it is with the ETS and the students. Escalante stated that he is the teacher and he knows his kids and he wants to see the tests, and that if they all made the same mistakes maybe it is because they all had the same teacher, and he taught them step by step calculus. Escalante accuses them of racism stating that if this were the beverly hills school, they wouldn't be second guessing those students,  Dr. Pearson got very offended as he grew up in that area of living as well. The discussion got heated and Escalante leaves the room leaving behind few words to catch their attention. "If I catch you on the street I'm gonna kick the shit out of you!"- J.Escalante

paper 1

James Jones
English 101
10/17/13
Professor Begert
How I started cutting hair
How did I learn how to cut hair? That is a good question, I learned by cutting my own hair. It started at the age of 13 in southern California, I remember when my mom would take me into a barbershop and I would sit there and get my hair done, it was such a cool process. It was cool because it felt good and it looked amazing when it was all done. When sitting in the chair I would observe the other barbers that were there and was curious on how they were cutting the hair. My mom bought me my own pair of clippers from Wal-Mart, and from there on I was cutting my own hair and learning how to do it.
There was a lot of repetition that was involved, like going to school with a crooked hair line, or going to the Baber and hearing him tell your mom that he shouldn’t cut his own hair anymore. Hearing things like that made me want to keep trying and trying until I got it down. I remember when I first cut someone’s hair other than mine, and that was my best friends. I sat him in a chair outside of my apartment in the middle of the night with a super bright porch light and cut his hair, I had my mom observe me do it. When I got done with his hair cut it was not perfect, but I did need the experience of cutting a different hair type. I did have a lot of fun cutting his hair.
I left California after I completed the 8th grade and I was kind of nervous about my hair. So when we moved to Washington we looked for a barber nearby in Bremerton. We found a shop called TJS. I remember my mom giving me the money and she sat in the car and waited while I got my hair cut. When I was done getting my haircut and the Baber letting me look in the mirror, I knew from there I was not going to sit in another chair and get another cut again, because I was going to learn. Now learning is not so easy when it comes to using a trimmer I thought it was going to be the easiest thing ever, I was completely wrong. I ran in to problems like having to sharp of a trimmer and cutting myself, or not having a sharp crisp line.
That was my biggest pet peeve of all time because I wanted my hair to look good. As time went on people started to notice my hair and asking questions. The main question I got was “hey who cuts your hair” it looks good. When I told them I did it myself they didn’t believe me. I always go that response it was funny for a little bit, until a friend of mine asked me to cut his hair in high school for homecoming. From there on that judgment stopped happening and people would ask me too cut their hair.
Cutting hair is not an easy thing to do because it takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. As well you have to be able to work with different people and be able to take criticism. My best friends have shown me the best of both worlds and I have worked with random people that I do not even know. I have had many influences in my life to want to keep cutting hair and get better at it. I have meet and talked to barbers that have their own shop, talked to teachers that can get you your degree.
Having that feeling around the people who do haircuts well and charge at a professional price is something special. Here’s an example, I went to a barbershop and talked to a random barber and asked him “hey do you know how to cut as good as having an extremely straight hairline like Steve Harvey” now the reason why I asked him that was because I had been watching movies and TV shows that have African American actors, and there hair looks perfect a sharp and it brought to be curiosity on how they do that and how I can get my hair to look like that. I mentioned Steve Harvey to the barber because he is a well-known person and his hair was amazing when he did have hair. The first thing he said was “it is all chemically done” I was like in my head what does that mean. He then proceeded to show me the dye called bigen. Bigen Is a permanent dye that can be used on female or male and the color lasts for a month.
I left and went home researched the product and got what I needed. I went and bought the dye and tried it on myself I was so happy with the results that I called my friend and I wanted to try it on him there are still a few things that I am learning but it is worth it because I like that outcome of a fresh haircut. Things that have also influenced me are YouTube videos of other peoples work, tutorials on how to do certain styles. Etc, plus I like the completion in the Bremerton area, there are only 2 other young barbers like me in the area that has a cliental and does great work. It pushes me to cut better and be better and have knowledge of things that the other barbers do not have, I research different ways of cutting hair from the other side of the county, mainly the south.

I plan on making a career out of cutting hair and becoming a professional barber and opening up my own shop. I know the steps that I need to take and what degree and courses that I need to take in order to be successful with my goal.

What ed. nar. i liked the most

The essay that I would say that stuck to me the most is Malcolm X's "learning how to read". the reason why I say that is because I like Malcolm x and the things that he done, and the movement he began back in the day. the essay got me to stay reading due to his experience in prison. Malcolm use the stay up long hours of the day and get only 3-4hours of sleep just so he can read. he had mentioned that he would read by his jail door to get light, until the guard will circle, that when he would hurry into bed and pretend to sleep. when the guard was done he would go back and read he would do that all night. it amazes me how one person had so much determination to learn and better his penmanship.

How the essays differ?

Malcolm X's, Rose's, and the 3 bloggers differ in my different ways. for starter the bloggers talk about there blogs and how to them, create them. Malcolm x's and rose's talk about there educational purposes. reading the 3 bloggers essay will benefit the person who is reading if they are looking how to blog or start a blog. Malcolm X and Rose are two different characters, so some reading there essays separately will understand how Malcolm taught himself to read, and learn about his prison life, compared to rose having a education at UCLA and the learning came easier.

Learning the ways to being a barber

How did I learn how to cut hair? That is a good question, I learned by cutting my own hair. It started at the age of 13,I remember when my mom would take me into a barbershop and I would sit there and get my hair done, it was such a cool process. My mom bought me my own pair of clippers from Wal-Mart, and from there on I was cutting my own hair and learning how to do it, there was a lot of repetition that was involved, now I cut hair like a pro, there are still a few things that I am learning but it is worth it because I like that outcome of a fresh haircut. Things that have influenced me are YouTube videos of other peoples work, tutorials on how to do certain styles. Etc, plus I like the completion in the Bremerton area, there are only 2 other young barbers like me in the area that has a cliental and does great work. It pushes me to cut better and be better and have knowledge of things that the other barbers do not have, I research different ways of cutting hair from the other side of the county, mainly the south, cause a lot of west coast barbers don’t have that kind of swag!!!

Successfully prewriting technique

honestly the only prewriting thing that I have used, and I am sure everyone else has used it as well, would be that bubble chart known as (clustering). when clustering you have your topic in the middle and from there would branch off your ideas that have to deal with that topic you have chosen. I have been using this skill since jr. high, it was really well and its a good starting point if you have no idea on what to right about, just start jotting down ideas.

Malcom X and Mike Rose narritive comparison

(Malcolm X)

(Mike Rose)
Reading both Malcolm X's and Mike Rose's narratives were both truly inspiring to read, both talked about how something was important to them, and what they did to reach that goal, Malcolm talked about his situation in being in jail and not being able to read, and only slept 3-4 hrs a night because he was trying to be more of a educated black man as well improving his penmanship. Mike rose is nationally recognized American education scholar who went to UCLA. his narrative talked about his events in the class room. both narrative essays format were similar except one was longer than the other, but reading both has put me on the right track to write my paper.
